Apply for the NewTechAqua Award Challenge!

Call for innovation – Apply by 20 December 2022

In recent years, the needs of the aquaculture sector have increased with the development of connectivity, digital transformation, and the rise of new technologies. This phenomenon has favored the emergence of new forms of businesses together with the irruption of many technology-based companies that are providing new solutions to the aquaculture sector, sometimes from other areas than agri-food.

This technological revolution, which is one of the main elements of the NewTechAqua Project, determine high competences between companies. Start-ups often encounter difficulties to get known to the sector and take advantage of the high added value they offer to satisfy the needs of a dynamic sector that constantly demands innovative solutions.

What is NewTechAqua Award Challenge?

The NewTechAqua Award Challenge seeks disruptive solutions based on the challenges listed below susceptible to bring economical, environmental, and social benefits and impacts in the aquaculture sector.

Taking part in our challenge will be a great opportunity for the five selected candidates:

  • Make your company, your products or your services known to a specialised international aquaculture audience.
  • Connect with NewTechAqua’s global innovation system and contacts with companies and researchers that demand your innovations.
  • Find partners for the development of your solution, if necessary.
  • Be selected for a coaching programme to improve the viability, the exploitation of your results and their market uptake.
  • Two months of coaching programme with expert members of NewTechAqua and other partners organisations.
  • Be invited to present your idea at the Aquaculture Forum by the end of 2023, including a promotional video as a prize.

The participating entities should respond to the main challenges identified by the NewTechAqua project. NewTechAqua’s activities, foreseen results and developed solutions are conceived to contribute to these challenges. A total of six challenges are defined as follows:

  1. Deliver solutions to improve fish and mollusk health and disease resistance: prediction models for specific diseases, kits for disease’ detection, new breeding programmes, and new diets.
  2. Increase the efficiency of aquaculture production systems via real-time management systems, satellite systems, and recommendations.
  3. Make the aquaculture sector more sustainable and circular through different rearing systems (RAS, biofloc technology, aquaponics) as well as new diets and feed products using fish by-products, fish processing wastewaters, and microalgae, new organic diets using plant proteins to produce more organic fish.
  4. Support diversification of fish species by studying the reproductive cycle of emerging fish species to re-create the best conditions for raising these new species in aquaculture production systems.
  5. Develop new eco-friendly fish and molluscs products with high nutritional value.
  6. Raise awareness and train professionals from the aquaculture sector by creating training programmes and conducting studies on consumers’ preferences.
